Great place to visit especially if you like social history. I have to say though that just the cafe itself is well worth a visit. The cakes are excellent and tasty. Bought some scones to take home which were excellent value. Will definitely go back to the cafe again when we visit the area , something to really look forward to.Posted on sue Snowshoe29 August 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was a lovely place to visit. With countless items of uniforms, costumes, equipment from farming , homes etc. lots of historical stuff loved the all the christening robes and the traditional style of lace work patterns on them. Well worth a visit for young children , teenagers & families. The mill itself is worth the visitPosted on Mike Guest22 August 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Can’t find enough superlatives to describe the wonderful experience we had on our visit on Friday. Fabulous exhibits, history and much more besides. The stories of the curator brought the place alive. The lovely ladies in the kitchen preparing and serving great home made food and baking. Robbie’s book. All excellent and an important Scottish collection which must make the people involved really proud. Left with a spring in my step after a great few hours.Posted on peter c21 September 2025Verified good afternoon out found this gem of a place on holiday.lohad a lovely sandwich and a pot of tea at the cafe before going in, what a brilliant afternoon we had, the exhibts are amazing, there are three floors of things to look at, the clothes exhibition is fab as are the other displays upstairs ll about scottish life and loads of other things to look at.it was a pleasure to meet robbie and have a really good chat with him about the history of the mill and what they have acheived over the last 40 years, this is well worth a visit, the ladies in the tea room were very helpful and theres a large selection of cakes on display as well as a variety of sandwiches and toasties.Posted on beccalovesbreakfast10 September 2025Verified Wonderful collection, friendly staff My mum and I came here yesterday to see the Ayrshire Whitework exhibition. What a wonderful trip! Lovely homemade soup, and an excellent slab of cake afterwards. Really interesting collections (costume and rural life) and had a lovely chat with Robert as well. Will definitely be back for a closer look at the collections, more cake (!), and hopefully a wee walk too.Posted on Malcolm D27 May 2025Verified More than interesting. Overwhelming.Charming. Great food at a good price I like industrial archaeology and this was a treat although past its former glory still charming. Tom Ferguson whose family owned the mill gave an excellent tour around explaining the beautiful oriental costumes aquifer over the years.Posted on Moihia B17 July 2024Verified The cake.....apricot, honey and carmamile spong cake... The cakes were absolutely delicious. The winner is the Apricot, honey and carmamile sponge cake....its really good. The textures and the flavour....top class. It makes all the cakes in Costa and starbuck and other cake shops to shame...Found my favourite cake of all time.....Posted on Ralph W10 April 2024Verified Eclectic exhibits, something for everyone, nice cakes! Interesting costume/fabric/fashion displays as well as farm/local history/rural life/watermill in a restored mill. It would be nice to see the watermill working at some point in the future, and similarly it would be nice to be able to purchase locally grown and milled grains. However, that’s a minor point and it was a very enjoyable visit - I last went about 20 years ago. The café serves good homemade food (the scones were just out of the oven when we arrived) and the coffee was good as were the cakes. North Ayrshire is a bit off the beaten track for tourist attractions, but this is one well worth supporting - not owned by council nor NTS, just the Dalgarven Mill Preservation Trust, which seeks to preserve the once family-owned mill.Posted on Jules K17 February 2024Verified Fantastic place with an interesting history We are new to Ayrshire and are exploring the area in our retirement. What a wonderful find this is! We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch in the cafe; delicious food and attentive, friendly service. Great value too! We were greeted by the mill owner, Robert who welcomed us to the museum. He outlined the interesting story of how he inherited the mill in a near derelict state and then spent many years renovating the buildings inside and out. Finally curating and displaying the fascinating items in the museum we enjoy today. This personal introduction provided an insightful perspective, which greatly enhanced our visit. We spent a couple of hours meandering through the different areas and particularly enjoyed the beautiful dolls house, little black dress costume exhibits and room displays. You can tell this has been a labour of love for the owner and all their hard work has resulted in a unique and lasting legacy for the area and the generations to come. We completed our visit with a short loop of the riverside walk. We had the place to ourselves! Highly recommended!Posted on Richard E24 October 2023Verified First Class. This a fantastic place to visit. We really loved taking our time to appreciate the exhibits. Then there's the wonderful cafe selling scrumptious food!!!!!!!Posted on Susan B21 September 2023Verified An interesting afternoon! We started our visit here by having lunch in the tearoom. I had home-baked quiche and salad which was delicious. We then had a look round the museum which contained some very interesting exhibits. I particularly enjoyed the Edwardian costume exhibition and enjoyed reading the cards explaining how the owner obtained the dresses. (My favourite story was the one where one of the ladies who agreed to sell a dress to the owner is still claiming her weekly piece of chocolate cake in the tearoom which was part of the agreement!) I also enjoyed the LBD exhibition and particularly admired the beaded dress! The dolls' house as you enter the museum was also fascinating. My husband enjoyed looking at the farming implements and we both enjoyed the room settings and seeing how the mill was renovated by the present owners. If you are in the area, make sure you pay a visit.Load more
